How did my faucet get a hole in it?

January 23rd, 2007

Leaky FaucetI have no idea how she managed to do it, but my wife put a hole in our faucet. She was washing a spaghetti pot, which has no sharp angles or protuberances. The next time that I went to use the faucet, I got sprayed!

The pin hole is near the top of the faucet, so it has nothing to do with the threaded piece that you can unscrew and replace. Before she washed the spaghetti pot, there was no hole. It remains as a complete mystery to both of us.

My theory is that it corroded from the inside and the hole formed when she knocked the pot against it. I am sure that I could just epoxy the hole shut, but I’m not sure what sort of shape the faucet is in and what we are getting along with our water from it.

Perhaps we can use this as an excuse to get a gooseneck faucet to replace it with? We really do not like the one that was there now. It seems that the house conspires to give us reasons to replace things that we do not like about it despite our plans to live with those things for a few years. That is why we have new doors in the basement.

For the meantime, I put some duct tape around the top so that it will not spray all over the kitchen when we use the faucet. A snow storm prevented me from driving home last night, so I was not able to take care of any more permanent solutions, be it a new faucet or some epoxy. We got our gift certificate for having bought our insulation for the attic from Home Depot, so I will probably just use that towards whatever we wind up using. At least it will not cost us more cash.
