Mowing the lawn is relaxing
July 25th, 2006I enjoy mowing my lawn. I liked mowing the lawn when I was a kid, too. For some reason it relaxes me. Today I especially enjoyed the lawn mowing. I am a marathoner, and so I run a lot of miles. My training currently has me running twice a day most days. I have had some minor aches and pains that needed attention so I took the day off from running. Mowing the lawn was the only workout for the day.
I have a much smaller lawn now than when I was a kid. We have about half an acre, some of which is not safely mowable since it is steep and drops off into some water. It takes me a little over an hour to mow the entire thing. I throw on some ear muffs so that I do not blast my ear drums all to pieces (yes, I worry about that sort of thing despite being fairly young) and just saunter behind my push mower up and down the yard one week, and back and forth across the yard the next week. I wouldn’t want to permanently engrain a path of mowing into it, after all.
One thing that my lawn needs is more grass, though. There are some areas that are mostly weeds, and I have a different kind of grass in the back of the house than in the front. It does not all grow in evenly, and there are a few places where there isn’t any at all. That is going to be next year’s project, though. I have enough of them this year, having just bought the house in the first place. This Autumn I will prepare the yard as best I can, and next Spring I will make sure that I have nice grass and flowers and see about getting some vegetables somewhere. I am not really sure where, though; my lawn is not conducive to having a garden.

[…] I find that mowing my lawn relaxes me and I enjoy doing it. I have a small lawn with a push mower, and it takes me on average a little over an hour to complete. It is mostly flat, but there are a few steep parts leading into my back yard, and there is a very steep drop off along the back of the property that leads into a brook. […]
