Why we did not use Macy’s bridal registry
August 24th, 2006Having recently gotten married, we registered at a couple of different stores. The idea behind a wedding registry is to have a place where it is easy for you to let guests of your wedding know what you would like in the event that they want to purchase a gift for you. Since the custom around here is to get a gift for somebody just for being invited to the wedding, it seemed like a good idea for the wife and I to do.
A big advantage to a wedding registry is that when people use that to purchase gifts for you, you do not get things that you already have or that other people are also getting for you. It also allows you to ask for things that you would like to have but that you probably would not bother to purchase for yourself, such as fine china.
Originally, we wanted to use Macy’s for our bridal registry because they have a large selection in the dinner ware department that you can go into the store to see. The service that we received, however, was atrocious. We decided that our business was better spent elsewhere.
When we got there, we were forced to hunt down the person manning the registry area, because she was not where she was supposed to be. Once we had, we got the pleasure of waiting for another 10 or 15 minutes to begin getting the paperwork to fill out and to chat with her. Once we filled out the necessary paperwork, we had her show us the different place settings and hoped that she would give us some information about them to help us in our ignorance.
The first thing that this woman did was ignore what we told her we wanted, and instead tried to keep showing us the things that she liked. It did not seem to sink in that we have enough casual dining implements and we wanted some nicer things.
Another tidbit of information we could have done without was her explanation of why china made in Indonesia is just as good as china made elsewhere, a concept that we basically agree with since we did not care where it was made. Her explanation, which we also did not care for, was that, “People in Indonesia need jobs too.” She told us that three times.
Eventually, we were hungry and frustrated after spending a couple of hours in Macy’s and really accomplishing nothing. We decided that there was no point in having our guests spend their money there, as neither of us were inclined to spend our own money there.

[…] I mentioned previously how we did not want to use Macy’s for our bridal registry. We wound up using Bed, Bath and Beyond and Home Depot instead. We have had nothing but positive experiences with Bed, Bath and Beyond. […]
