Do at least one thing to the house per day
September 15th, 2006When I moved into my house, my uncle gave me some advice.
Do at least one job on the house that needs doing every day. It doesn’t matter if it takes 10 minutes or 10 hours, but if you get at least one thing done every day then you will never get overwhelmed.
Given my limited experience so far, I think that that is good advice and have been trying to take it to heart. I have not really done that well with it, though. Some days I am only home and awake for a maximum of one or two hours, most of which is taken up by cooking and eating. Other days I get to spend a more reasonable amount of time at home, and most of those I manage to do something.
Sometimes it is something as small as picking up a mess I left laying around. Other days it is a quick job that just needs doing, such as replacing an electrical outlet with a GDI outlet.
One of the big jobs that I’ve been wanting to get done but just have not gotten to is rearranging our kitchen. We have a lot more room than we used to in terms of counter space, but we are still having trouble keeping the counters cleared off and finding a conveniant place for all of the dishes. Most of them have remained in their “get them unpacked and usable” location and need to be moved around to something a little more conveniant.
I think that will be this weekend’s project. Next weekend I can tackle something like installing a bathroom vent. Next week is time enough to vacuum the carpet.

This is great advice. But I’m very bad at heeding it.

Yeah, me too. The kitchen still needs rearranging. The bathroom vent is probably going to get pushed back to October now.
