County Fairs
September 28th, 2006This week is the Cumberland County Fair, and I managed to get over there this evening. When I was growing up, I lived about a quarter mile from our town’s local Lion’s Club, and would always spend most of the week at the fairgrounds when they had their harvest fair. The Cumberland County Fair is not quite so large, but it does bring back a lot of good memories.
The food was really good this year. I had a philly cheese steak that was actually worth eating, half of a kielbasa, and a bit of fried dough. I got to check out my friend’s award winning jam, but we missed out on buying a slice of her non-award winning pie. One of the winning pies that was being auctioned off had gotten moldy, though, so maybe I did not miss out too much. It was feeding time for the cows, so other than one calf I didn’t get to see much of them. I am not a big fan of staring at their backsides and would rather look at their heads. The goats and sheep were all in a good mood, though.
There was no cow poke contest, but we did get to watch an oxen pull. The best pair we saw were pulling 7200 pounds before meeting their max.
Unfortunately, things were breaking at work, so I was not able to fully enjoy the entire experience since I had people trying to call my cell phone every few minutes. I was not able to do anything, since I do not think the chickens or rabbits were hiding laptop computers in their cages (or were they…) and I had no way of fixing anything other than to tell them to reboot and hope it starts working. By the time I left the fair and got back to work they had fixed their problems.
