Good help at Home Depot can be hit or miss

November 18th, 2006

This weekend, I am finally getting a chance to insulate my attic. More on that next week. Today, I’d like to talk about the customer service that I received at Home Depot. The service that I received ran from great to awful, but not necessarily in that order.

I went into the store, and there was nobody in the building materials section near the insulation. The one person that I did find said that he did not know the answers to my question so he would try to find somebody for me. He never did, but I did pass him later on and he asked if I had ever gotten the help that I needed.

I eventually found a guy that said he could help me when he finished helping another person. That is fine. When he did come to help me, though, he was not particularly helpful. In fact, he recommended that I buy insulation that was twice as expensive as what I actually needed and was not particularly well suited to the the task I needed it for.

I went to the service desk, and they asked if I minded waiting for the building materials manager to finish helping somebody. I waited for probably 8 or 10 minutes, and then the manager was very helpful. He made sure that I got the right kind of insulation, helped me figure out how much I needed, and cleared off a cart for me to get it up to the front.

Normally, when I go to a Home Depot, I either get great service or awful service. It is usually the the same every time I go to that particular store, as well; some areas employ people that are worth talking to and genuinely want to help you, and others employ people folks that are looking for a way to spend their days in return for a paycheck. This is the first time that I got such a mix of both.

[…] Yesterday, I went to Home Depot to get everything that I needed. I wound up having to make 3 trips in total (2 trips, plus I turned around and went back a third time when I was 3/4 of the way home when I realized I forgot something), and rather than having more than I needed of everything I wound up having not enough.
