A new bathroom vent part 2

October 12th, 2006

The vent is now wired and working! Not being comfortable with the wiring of the vent ourselves, my uncle and I installed it but did not hook it up. Tonight I had the electrician that does all of electrical work at my place employment come out and hook things up. His son in law came with him, which made the work go relatively quickly and I did not have to do too much.

A new bathroom vent part 1

October 8th, 2006

This morning, my uncle and I installed a new vent in the bathroom. The one that I wanted to put in was out of stock at Home Depot, so I got one at Lowes that pushes a little bit more air and is a tiny bit louder. Our priorities for what we wanted (in order of importance) were:

  1. Quiet - the one that we wanted was 1.0 sones and the one that we got was only only 1.2 sones, so we still made out rather well in the sound department.
  2. Strong - we wanted one that could push a lot of air and be useful - the one that we were looking at originally pushed 80 CFM, and we got one that was a little better at 90 CFM.
  3. Light - we wanted one that had a light in with it as well as being a fan, and that is what we got.
  4. Heat - we would have liked a heat lamp, but we did not get one.

Unclogging the toilet

September 29th, 2006

Having a few runners in the family, we can sometimes wind up with a clogged toilet. It seems to happen more frequently now that we have our own house than it did when we were in the apartment, but that is probably a function of the toilet being pink. I’m not really sure though.

Tonight, I could not get the toilet unclogged. Normally, I just take the plunger to it, and in 5 minutes to a half hour I will usually have everything working normally. Plungers are very easy tools to use. You cover the hold at the bottom of the tank with the bottom of the plunger, and then you just push it in and let it pop back out until you unclog it or until the water level in your toilet gets so low that that it does not create a seal around the plunger. In that case, you can dump more water in or try flushing to see whether it will work or not (and fill your bowl up with water to try some more if it did not work.)

Tonight, that just was not enough. A trip to Home Depot and we now have a toilet auger. Basically, it a plastic tube shaped so that you can get the cable up into your sewage line. You just push the cable through the tube and rotate the handle to dislodge whatever is clogging up the works. Then you carefully pull it back out and everything works the way it is supposed to. Just be careful not to scratch your toilet bowl.

Use the right tools for the right job

New shower curtain rod and towel rackA week ago I put up a new shower curtain rod in the bathroom. It was one of those ones that curve out away from the tub so that it seems like you have more room in the shower without actually installing a larger tub. It works out great. It took me a while to get it up, however. First, the old shower curtain rod was painted onto the wall with what seemed like 5000 coats of paint, so removing it was a little more difficult than just taking out some screws and not letting it drop. Once it was done, though, I had to install the anchors for the new shower curtain. I did not realize it at the time, but I was using too small of a drill bit for the sheetrock anchors that I had.

More Space for a Mess

July 19th, 2006

One thing that amazes me is how much more space there is to create a mess now that I have a house.

Our basement is definately a mess; when we moved in, all the boxes just got dumped down there haphazardly by myself and my uncles. The biggest problem was keeping them from blocking all the doors. Our haphazard way of unpacking hasn’t helped clean that up any. Add to that the lack of actual unpacking going on with our wedding plans in full swing and it is not a pretty picture.

An Intelligent Spider

July 12th, 2006

Spider Web outside the windowA spider has adopted our bathroom window for its web. In a heavy rain or particularly windy days its web can get pretty trashed, but the spider never lacks for food there. The insects are attracted to the light through the window and get stuck in the web. Even if they manage to get to the screen in the window, when they leave there are good chances that they will be caught on the way out as well.

The trick now will be making sure that I keep an eye out for egg sacks, since I do not want a lot of baby intelligent spiders in my bathroom. I will either have to keep the window shut or else get rid of the web if I see it sporting an egg sack at any point.

Click on the picture for a larger view of the web where you can actually see it..
